2020 LEC finals sets a new record for esports viewership

In an official blog post on its new portal, Riot Games released the viewership numbers of the 2020 League of Legends European Championship finals. Despite the current situation, the LEC finals showcasing G2 Esports versus Fnatic broke many records from last year.

As a result of everything else being canceled due to the pandemic, many new fans jumped on the esports bandwagon. And the LEC did an amazing job looking at its viewership results and numbers.

2020 LEC Finals Viewership

In the finals, G2 ended up sweeping Fnatic 3-0. Even though the first round was taken quickly by G2, Fnatic still fought valiantly in both the second and third rounds. However, G2 managed to score a comeback to win round two and decided on an aggressive line-up for game three. Fnatic did what they could but G2 took the trophy home.

The 2020 LEC finals were the most viewed LEC series of all-time, according to Riot Games. On average, 819,414 viewers watched it, which is an increase of 70% over the LEC 2019’s finals. With almost a million concurrent viewers (952,339) at its peak, G2 vs Fnatic viewership increased by 16.7% over last year.

League of Legends fans watched 40,041,750 hours of content during the Summer Split, an increase of 85% over last year. This is the biggest increase between the three statistics unveiled on LoL Esports. Having a huge content strategy based on social media and a new website made a noticeable impact.

Mad Lions and Rogue dominated the regular season. Nonetheless, G2 and Fnatic went to the LEC finals after showing a huge amount of resilience in the playoffs. This created an environment where fans didn’t want to miss the run of the century.

Despite that, we came together to celebrate the best League of Legends that Europe has to offer, and we couldn’t have done it without all of our partners, staff, media, players, and viewers”.

Four European teams advanced to Worlds 2020 as a result of this Summer Split. Europe will send G2, Fnatic, Mad Lions, and Rogue as its representatives. The 2020 League of Legends World Championship starts on September 25 and will likely break even more records. With so many people hooked up on League of Legends, Worlds will be a highly followed event once again.
