HLTV recently updated its Counter-Strike: Global Offensive world rankings, which now features German team Berlin International Gaming as the number one squad in the world. Reaching this spot is the end goal for every esports team in the industry. However, in sports and esports, it is more difficult to hold that spot rather than earning it in the first place. With this spot, BIG becomes the team to beat and will be analyzed by every competitor.
Berlin International Gaming’s 2020 Start
This number one place was earned thanks to BIG’s performance at cs_summit six. In this Regional Major Ranking tournament, the German team suffered in the beginning and ended up in the lower bracket. Despite this slow start, BIG’s players showed determination and reached Grand Finals. At that point, it was a fight between two titans, BIG and Fnatic. In the end, even with a map disadvantage, BIG came out on top and won the tournament, earning the German team the number one spot in HLTV world rankings.

2019 was very disappointing for BIG fans out there. There were no results at all worthy of BIG’s ambitions. As a result, in January 2020, BIG made some important roster moves that changed everything. With this new squad, BIG won DreamHack Leipzig and earned a spot at DreamHack Masters Spring Europe. BIG’s players, full of confidence, also won that event.
A few roster changes made a huge difference as BIG’s players finally found chemistry. Johannes “tabseN” Wodarz, İsmailcan “XANTARES” Dörtkardeş, Tizian “tiziaN” Feldbusch, Florian “syrsoN” Rische, and Nils “k1to” Gruhne found their rhythm since January. The number one spot is a result of the German team’s insane 2020 start.
Number One CS:GO Team
Even though BIG is now number one, it is only by a slight margin. Only three points separate top CS:GO team BIG from number two Fnatic. From June 15 when the last world rankings were uploaded, the German team won six places and now sits at the top of worldwide CS:GO esports according to HLTV.
“What an achievement,” tabseN stasted. “For me, it means the world to be able to climb to #1.”
Many fans showed doubt about tabseN leading his team to the number one spot. But he clearly showed at the beginning of the year that he was reliable and to be trusted.
With that low of a margin, CS:GO fans will look forward to BIG and Fnatic performing and facing each other in events. It is these details that make esports entertaining to watch. Berlin International Gaming will have to stay focused on staying the top CS:GO team while Fnatic will fight again for the ultimate crown.
