IMAX partners with esports startup Vindex

NEW YORK – Esports company Vindex has announced a new partnership with IMAX. The two companies plan to work together to offer exclusive esports content on the big screen. With more than 15 hundred IMAX theaters in more than 80 countries and territories worldwide, the team hopes to bring esports fans together, both locally and globally.

According to the press release, fans can gather at their local IMAX theater to experience “cutting-edge esports content.” This implies that fans will be able to watch some of their favorite esports events live in theaters. In addition, other esports related content may make its way into theaters.

It may be that only specific events will be streamed, meaning fans can only watch finals and other important tournaments. Another option is for fans to purchase some sort of season pass and watch events offered by a league. Leagues like the Overwatch League, Rainbow Six Pro League, and the new Call of Duty League will great theater events.

Mark Sepso, CEO of Vindex, made it clear fans should expect content from the most popular esports leagues saying.

“We will focus on creating incredible experiences for fans by combining our deep relationships with esports leagues and game-publisher partners with our track record of producing some of the most-watched events in esports history.” said Mark Sepso.

“2019 went well for movie theaters, with attendance up compared to the previous year. However, it seems that these companies may be trying to make up for the 28% decline in moviegoing since 2002 by bringing esports into the mix. For example, Cinemark streamed The Game Awards live to 53 theaters just last year.”
