Immortals wins VCT Challengers 1: Open Qualifier

Last night, Immortals defeated all of its opponents during the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) North America Challengers 1: Open Qualifier, even beating Team Envy in the qualifier’s grand final.

Riot Games and Nerd Street Gamers partnered to come up with the first Open Qualifiers, loaded with talented teams like Team Envy, Gen.G Esports, Sentinels, Luminosity Gaming, and First Strike winner 100 Thieves. However, this VALORANT esports tournament saw a really unexpected winner in Immortals.

VCT North America Challengers 1

To reach the closed part of Open Qualifiers, Immortals had to win over Big Frames and Cloud9 Blue. While it defeated the first 2-0, Cloud9 Blue was more difficult to handle. After a 10-13 loss on Split, Immortals fought back and secured Ascent and Icebox. The same story repeated itself with XSET and Sentinels, who were in Immortals’ way to the grand finals. Sentinels managed to get back to a 1-1 series score with a victory on Haven before losing its chance on Ascent.

Immortals was an underdog in the VCT North America Challengers grand finals as opposed to Team Envy. In addition, Team Envy did not lose a single map of the tournament, showcasing both confidence and technical skills. Immortals started well with a win on Split 13-8 before losing on Icebox 11-13. Nonetheless, two very solid runs on Bind (13-6) and Ascent (13-5) sealed the deal for them. Surprising everyone, this young team of players secured the victory over Envy, who was considered a tournament favorite.

The Rise of Immortals

It is a known fact that Immortals’ VALORANT esports team has not seen stability for a while. Even though they are skilled in spotting good, this North American team could not secure them. In a matter of a few months, more than ten players have been a part of Immortals’ lineup.

While Jason “jmoh” Mohandessi and Jason “neptune” Tran parted with the team days before this VCT Open Qualifier, the team had to rely on Rhett “Kehmicals” Lynch and Nicholas “NaturE” Garrison to perform in their place. The feel-good story of Andrew “ShoT_UP” Orlowski was also brought to light on Twitter with the pro finally getting his chance. A few months back, every NA team had lost hope in him before Immortals put its trust in him.

Despite its struggle, Immortals winning VCT North America Challengers 1 is what most would consider a miracle. It could even be a new beginning for the team that could now look up to the future with hope. Fans can’t wait for what’s next in esports with the VALORANT Champions Tour and North America’s qualifiers
