Louis Vuitton and Riot Games partner starting with Worlds

Riot Games and Louis Vuitton have announced a partnership in advance of the 2019 World Championship. While the exact details of what the partnership will entail remains a mystery, we already know a few things that they will be doing.

Louis Vuitton is a respected clothing brand that has sponsored sporting events in the past and has made itself known for its prestige and popularity. With this partnership Riot Games has asserted League of Legends as a leader in not just esports, but in all forms of global competition.

Trophy Cases, Skins, and More

Louis Vuitton will be designing a one-of-a-kind case to hold the Summoner’s Cup for the winner of Worlds. They have done cases to hold trophies before for world-renowned sports in the past, such as the FIFA World Cup. However, this is the first esports event to have a case and partnership from Louis Vuitton. Besides the case, Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director of Women’s collections, Nicolas Ghesquière, has created a set of skins for the game and a capsule collection.

The remaining details of the partnership will be announced on Nov 10 at the Finals of the Worlds event. With the announcement, League players have begun expressing their excitement for skins that Ghesquière will be creating.

Critics of the game and Riot Games have questioned whether the partnership is worth it for Louis Vuitton. Christian “IWDominate” Rivera questioned if the League of Legends player base would be able to afford any Louis Vuitton brand products.

Many others, however, pointed out the Asian market, with China, in particular, is much more diverse and capable of purchasing Louis Vuitton products. On Facecheck, a League of Legends podcast, it was also pointed out that prestigious clothing brands were beginning to try to be slightly more accessible.

Regardless of how the company intends to make a profit from partnering, Louis Vuitton has decided to invest in League of Legends. Investing not only as a sponsor but as a partner.

With the announcement of the skins, capsule and more to come, the first partnered content in League is sure to make a splash. Viewers of the sport and players of the game should be optimistic looking toward more possible partnerships and unique content.
