In one of the greatest sets to watch in Super Smash Bros Melee esports history, Cloud9 Joseph “Mang0” Marquez completed a stellar run from the losers bracket to defeat Zain “Zain” Naghmi in the Smash Summit 11 grand finals.
Yesterday was huge.
If you haven’t watched some of the #SmashSummit 11 VODs yet… you’re missing out ?
Congratulations again to our champion, @C9Mang0!

Mang0 Beats Zain
The fierce match between a Fox player and a Marth main lasted over 30 minutes with ten maps played. On top of that, every single map looked close, only being won with one or two stocks remaining. Smash Summit 11 Melee even marks Mang0’s first-ever summit title earned. The second set wrapped up the tournament with Mang0 beating Zain on Final Destination.
Mang0’s tournament journey also looked remarkable with his win rate. Despite starting in the loser’s bracket against Justin “Plup” McGrath, he defeated him in a quick 3-1 fashion. From there, the Cloud9 player faced off against Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma, one of Smash Melee esports’ best and consistent event winners. But he also lost in a 3-1 match and Zain followed suit at the end.
Without Zain there isn't the melee we all see today
I wouldn't be here playing if I didn't think some little hot shot fuck could make me the absolute best version of myself
I look forward to the classics we will share
I got atleast a few years in the tank

Smash Summit 11
Smash Summit 11 boasted the largest ever prize pool for a Smash Melee esports event with $155,640 just for singles. And with his victory, Cloud9 Mang0 won $46,692 from that prize pool. In second place, Golden Guardians Zain won $23,350.35 from the tournament. Team Liquid’s Hungrybox won nearly $20 thousand in third and Panda’s Plup took about $15 thousand home in fourth.
Although this was the first big Smash event now that LANs and live events return, there’s still more to come. Beyond the Summit will keep up its Smash esports action with Smash Ultimate Summit 3 starting on August 26. As for Smash Melee esports fans, they can rest briefly as the community celebrates Mang0’s first summit title in the biggest prize pool yet.
