Blizzard has revealed details of the 2020 Overwatch Contenders gauntlet that will feature four regional competitions to determine the best esports teams from each region. This year’s Contender Gauntlet will take place online, announced Blizzard in the official announcement.
Overwatch Contenders 2020 Gauntlet
The Contenders gauntlet will take place online in four regions: Asia, South America, Europe and North America, each region with a different format. Players can showcase their talent and teams to compete for the title of the best Overwatch Contenders team. The 2020 Contenders Gauntlet will most likely be the last Overwatch esports event of the year.
North America and Europe
North America and Europe are two of the biggest regions in Overwatch esports. The Overwatch Contenders Gauntlet 2020 will have twelve teams in Europe and North America. Each region has a $100 thousand prize pool. Eight teams from the November Contenders tournament will qualify for this event. The top four teams from the open qualifiers will also join the list of teams and play it out in a double-elimination bracket. All matches will be a first-to-three map format, while the grand finals will be a first-to-four series.
North America and Europe also feature two show matches after the grand finals. The NA runners-up will play against the European runner-up. The winners from each region will also face each other to temporarily settle the NA vs EU debate.
The Asian segment, with a $150 thousand prize pool, will have ten teams, including four from China, four Korean teams, 1 team from Asia-Pacific and one from Australia. The group stage takes place from December 10 to December 13, while the knockout stage is a few days later on December 18.
The knockout stage will be a double-elimination bracket with the top-seeded teams from both China and Korea receiving byes into the semifinals. The four teams that qualify from the group stage will start from the upper bracket.
South America will have just eight teams competing for a share of the $75 thousand prize pool. The top four teams from Overwatch Contenders South America Season 2 playoffs and the top four teams from the Open Bracket Qualifier will qualify for the 2020 Gauntlet.
The South American gauntlet group stage will take from December 4 to December 6 while the knockout stage is live from December 11 to December 13. The SA gauntlet will use a Dual Tournament format with the top three teams from each group advancing to the final knockout stage.
The knockout stage will be a six-team single-elimination bracket with all matches in a first-to-four format.
These matches will most likely be the final Overwatch esports action that fans can see before the end of 2020. The coronavirus pandemic forced Blizzard and the Overwatch League to change plans, including moving matches online. Despite all that, San Francisco Shock won the Overwatch League 2020 Grand finals after a 4-1 victory over Seoul Dynasty. Now how will Overwatch Contenders fare in a different environment?
