PS5 and Xbox Series X will take esports to the next level

Sony just released a video showcasing the insides of its latest console, the PlayStation 5. As the next generation consoles launch soon, now is a perfect time to look at how Sony and Microsoft’s new machines, PS5 and Xbox Series X, impact the esports industry.

Marketing Sacrifice

It was a well-known fact that desktop and consoles are the home of esports. Despite mobile esports gaining more traction, it isn’t at the same level. One of the lessons that game developers learned these past few years is to not require the full power of PC and consoles for video games.

As strange as it sounds, this is done to make games more accessible by making sure they can run on weaker desktops. Games like League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Fortnite, or Overwatch are perfect examples of this. But there are exceptions like PUBG or Call of Duty: Warzone that revolves their games around high-end graphics. Both storage speed and heat also have a large impact on how a game can run. All these arguments point to developers not using the full powers of the machines at their dispositions.

PS5 and Xbox Series X

With new machines like the PS5 and the Series X, developers might be able to create esports titles with more ambition. For example, in Sony’s video, the mechanical design department’s VP highlighted a few arguments to support this theory.

In addition to the console being an amazing performer, the machine should stay quiet at all times. He also mentioned that the power efficiency went up to another level, boasting that not one gamer should experience any heat issues. All of this is achieved through liquid metal cooling and carefully designed airflow.

Even though both PS5 and Xbox Series X use AMD chips to function, the timing is really interesting. Nvidia just launched its new series of graphics cards, the RTX 3000 series. With more new technologies coming through, the esports industry will surely see an impact.

In esports, any stuttering or decrease in framerate can make a difference. With new powerful consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X, the overall level of esports games may increase. Both the physical and the digital versions of the PS5 will be available in November. The former should be priced at $499.99 while the latter will cost $399.99.
